Thurisaz Rune - The Rune of Thor

THURISAZ

AKA: Thurs, Thor, Thorn
How to pronounce Thurisaz: ‘Thoo-ree-sas’
Letter: Th

The primary connotations of Thurisaz are protection and resistance from danger / unwanted circumstances.

The visual shape of this rune has been described as both a thorn and a hammer, hence why it is known as the thorn rune and also the rune of Thor. It was common for the ancient Germanic people to wear a small Mjolnir pendant around their neck to invoke the protective power of the thunder god, the protector of Midgard.

This rune can be considered as a friendly but stern warning for the wearer to be alert for potential danger. Finally, the Thurisaz rune is also associated with luck.

THURISAZ REVERSED

"Thurisaz reminds us to be more open"

The reversed Thurisaz indicates that when faced with a dangerous situation, a good outcome is unlikely. It's also related to any advice or a helping hand being ignored, leading to a situationally negative outcome.

Reversed Thurisaz reminds us to be more open and willing to take advice from those we trust, even if we aren't happy with what we're hearing. It can indicate stubbornness, refusing sound help that could have aided you to avoid an unwanted experience.

NOTES FROM THE SHAMAN

"I recommend investing in a Mjolnir pendant. I personally wear one every day"

Drawing Thurisaz can be a good way to remind you to be careful of what lies ahead, to be weary and choose a more defensive stance to the situation. Another way to use Thurisaz is to wear the Mjolnir pendant, as the hammer shares both a similar visual shape to Thurisaz and a strong connection to Thor.

Drawing Thurisaz reversed may come from a situation where you were offered advice and were stubborn, leading to a bad situation. This rune can remind you to be more open to help in the future, leading to a situation where you avoid the negative outcome.

Personally I wear a Mjolnir pendant day in and day out, and can think of many situations where I was offered advice which I didn't take which led to a situation that had me wishing that I did.
